Microsoft has finally introduced trackpad support for Office Microsoft 365 on the iPad.
The update – which covers Word, PowerPoint, and Excel – is designed to help these apps more closely resemble their desktop counterparts when it comes to things like selecting text, resizing page elements, grouping spreadsheet cells, and so on.
The tweak fulfils a promise made by Microsoft earlier this year to add improved cursor support in its iPadOS Office apps, and will roll out to customers over the coming fortnight.
Apple proved somewhat reluctant in bringing mouse and trackpad compatibility to the iPad. It first appeared as an accessibility feature intended for those unable to use a standard touch interface, and was not positioned as something intended for routine day-to-day usage. That messaging changed earlier this year, with the launch of iPadOS 13.4, which added full mouse and trackpad support.
Apple later expanded upon this with the Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro – an excellent if arse-clenchingly expensive trackpad and keyboard combination for the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Third-party manufacturers have also had a go, notably Logitech, with its also-solid new Combo Touch case. We have one, and will be publishing a review in the coming weeks.
Hardware isn't the problem here. The biggest Achilles' heel when it comes to cursor support on iPadOS is the woeful lack of consistency among apps. This becomes apparent when doing basic tasks like copying and pasting.
Some apps allow you to select text with the cursor. Others require you to tap-and-drag the screen, like you would with an iPhone. It's exactly as infuriating as it sounds, and it feels like a massive oversight for a company that once took pride in its meticulous attention to detail.
The update to Office 365 shows that when it comes to resolving this, the onus is on individual developers, rather than Apple itself. While cursor support will become more widespread in the coming years as more people use their iPads as laptops, punters will have to suffer this inconstancy for a while longer. ®
To setup Office 365 on an iPad its always best to have the latest version of iOS to ensure any bug fixes or updates to ActiveSync have been deployed.

I like to test my account info using Outlook Web App first then I know that I have the information correct and I can rule that out as an issue if it doesn't work first time – it's very common for typos on the phone or password miscommunication to cause issues connecting. Go to mail.office365.com and test signing in with your credentials. If it signs in you now know you have the right information.
Setup Office 365 on an iPad
- Turn on your iPhone, and then tap the Settings icon.
- On the Settings screen, tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
- On the Mail, Contacts, Calendars screen, tap Add Account.
- On the Add Account screen, tap Microsoft Exchange – you can have multiple Exchange accounts
- On the Exchange screen, tap the Email box, and then type your e-mail address. (For example ringo.starr@thebeatles.com.)
- Tap the Username box, and then type your e-mail address again unless you have been told it is different to the email, either because of Federation or some other company policy.
- Tap the Password box, and then type your password.
- Leave the Description box – by default, the Description box is filled automatically with your e-mail address. You can overwrite this if you want a different description. You can leave the domain box blank.
- Tap Next – the iPad begins verifying the account information (this can take a minute or so) – if you receive a Verify Certificate message, tap Accept.
- The Server box should auto populate but if it doesn't tap the Server box, and then type mail.office365.com – do not include the https:// prefix.
- Tap Next.
- The iPad sometimes begins verifying the new information. If you receive a Verify Certificate message here, tap Accept.
- Select the information you want to synchronize, and then tap Done – it is recommended to sync all items and use the Exchange repository as your central database for calendaring, contacts and email. Therefore if you change a contact in Outlook, your phone will be updated immediately and vice-versa.
Thats it. Done you now have Office 365 email setup on an iPad.
